Five Classic Mystery Novels

May 16, 2012 11:05 am

There are a lot of incredible mystery novels out there, making it hard to find a place to start. These masterpieces of the genre stand out from the pack, and are absolutely worth checking out.

The Spy Who Came In From the Cold
An incredible work of Cold War intrigue, John LeCarre's masterful tale of espionage is admired for its authentic feel and gripping psychological realism. It's widely considered to be the greatest spy novel ever written.

Rebecca
Although frequently remembered for Alfred Hitchcock's brilliant film, Rebecca began as a classic novel by Daphne du Maurier. As a young girl marries a mysterious and powerful man, the memory of his first wife haunts the estate and draws her into its dark secrets.

The Maltese Falcon
Author Dashiell Hammett's Detective Sam Spade is a cold, smart man who gets caught up in the search for a statue said to be encrusted with priceless jewels. Full of intriguing characters and dark, gritty atmosphere, this classic tale became a famous film starring Humphrey Bogart.

The Hound of the Baskervilles
This novel is perhaps the most immortal of the Sherlock Holmes stories. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle crafted the quintessential mystery here, with murder and deception within a dark, ominous mansion.

The Postman Always Rings Twice
A short but compelling tale, James M. Cain's novel of lust and greed is full of dark characters and twisted morality. Its dark, moody style helped to define the noir novel.

Located in the historic Bishop Arts District, Lucia offers an ambiance that seems as if it's from a bygone era. This charming restaurant is a foodie must-visit, meaning reservations on weekends are strongly recommended. Once you’re tucked into the romantic little nook, the knowledgeable waitstaff will help guide you through a menu of several courses and an extensive wine list. The menu changes from month-to-month to reflect fresh, seasonal ingredients plus the chef’s culinary inventiveness. Any antipasti dish featuring salumi, cured in-house, is a must, though other favorites include fois gras, salads with duck confit, and oyster dishes. Light, flavorful entrees include beef tongue, pork shoulder, gnocchi, and pork ragu. Prices for entrees run $25 to $35, a bargain for the array of unique tastes. If you can, save room for dessert like walnut and ricotta cannoli with apples and rosemary.
